The Echo Bay Murders – Chapter IV
Hello everyone, and welcome to our walkthrough for Chapter 4 of “The Echo Bay Murders” another game in the series of AE mysteries, developed and published by Haiku Games.
In the previous chapter, Kate found herself in the forest, after descending down the zip line. While exploring the area, she discovered Ava’s body, buried on the river bank, so now, she was absolutely certain that the man that kidnapped her is the serial killer that she was investigating. After some more explorations, Kate blew up a huge rock and discovered the killer’s “man cave” (it was literally a cave) behind the waterfall. In the cave, she found his “Dog Tags” but they only had a serial number – the name has been scratched. Unfortunately, at this moment, she heard a truck stopping in front of the cave, and presumed that the killer has tracked her down. She had nowhere left to hide, and the cave has only one exit… The last sound that she heard was the cocking of a gun.
Kate decided to quickly run out of the cave, but she stopped as soon as she stepped outside because she found herself staring at the end of the barrel. Well, it seems that Kate is very lucky, because the man with the rifle, wasn’t the killer that was after her, but some stranger that accidentally stumbled into the area. However, this stranger (Phil) was still very suspicious, because he saw Ava’s body, and now he was looking at Kate, who was covered in mud and blood. Logically, he thought that Kate was the killer, so he decide to keep his rifle pointed at her. Our character tried to explain that she is actually a detective, Kate Gray, but Phil wouldn’t take her word for it. He wanted to see her ID.
Kate explains that she was kidnapped and asks Phil to give her a ride to the nearest town. But, Phil still doesn’t believe her and keeps her in his sights.
Select the “Evidence Notebook” from the inventory and show it to Phil.
Kate explains that the name of a woman in a shallow grave was Ava McWilliam and that she was investigating her disappearance at the gas station. Phil scratches his head, trying to process this information, but Kate urges him to take her to the town, because the killer is probably looking for her, and he could show up any second now.
Phil proclaims that Kate’s “Evidence Notebook” looks legitimate, and he decided to trust her story. However, he is going to keep the notebook until someone on the police force confirms her identity. With that said, he lowers his gun, and officially introduces himself (well, we already knew his name because it’s right above the subtitle :).
Kate immediately says that Phil should call the police, but he explains that he already tried to call the police when he saw Ava’s body, but he couldn’t get the signal on his cellphone. Phil also informs her that his truck got a flat tire.
Knowing that they do not have time to waste because the killer could appear any second now, Kate comes up with the plan. She instructs Phil to climb on the cliff and try to get the signal from the higher ground. Meanwhile, she will change the tier. Highly unusual, because Phil is a man, and it’s his truck. Anyway, Phil says that she can find the tools in the back of the truck, and heads off.
Tap on the trunk to open it. After that, tap on the green box to take a closer look at it.
The box is locked by a four-digit code. If you ask Phil about it, he will say that his wife changed the code and he didn’t memorize it (the new code). Obviously, he can’t call his wife because there’s no signal.
Luckily, this code is very easy to creak. Each number of the code is surrounded by a metal ring, and on these rings, there is a certain number of screws. Well, the number of the screws represents the number of the code. In other words, just count the screws and insert the value.
You will end up with the number “8798”.
In the box, you will find two items, “Tire Iron” and “Car Jack”. Tap on them to pick them up.
Next, tap on the “Spare Tire” on top of the truck to pick it up.
Ok, let’s change the flat tire. First, select the “Car Jack” from the inventory and use it to lift the truck.
Next, select the tire iron from the inventory and remove the screws from the flat tire (front left).
Next, select the “Spare Tire” from the inventory and use it to replace the flat tire.
Select the “Tire Iron” from the inventory, again, and use it to tighten the screws.
Phil is surprised because Kate very quickly managed to crack the code on the box and to change the tire. Since he couldn’t get a signal for his cellphone, Kate suggest that they should head toward town. She will send police officers to collect Ava’s body (and search for the killer I presume), as soon as they reach the police station. Phil agreed, and they drive away.
On their way to town, Kate and Phil have a chat. Kate says that she came into town to help her friend on the case that he was working on. This case, as we already know, includes the disappearance of several women in this area. Phil replies that he is aware of the disappearance, and finds it very strange that several women suddenly disappeared, in their quiet, small town. Kate explains that she was pushed off the road as soon as she go into town (well, technically she was shot at and crashed). She also explains that she never reached the police station, and asks Phil to borrow his phone so she could contact them and let them know that she is alive and on her way. They traveled for some time now, so cellphone should work.
At this moment, Phil noticed that another truck is following him, very closely. Kate immediately recognized the black truck. The killer was on their tail, and his intentions certainly weren’t friendly…
A few moments later, the black truck slammed into them, and Phil lost control of his vehicle. They crashed into the van that was parked in the middle of the road, for some reason.
When Kate woke up, she saw a glass shard sticking out from her leg. She called out to Phil, but he was unconscious because he suffered a head injury in the crash.
First, tap on the “Glass shard” to pull it out, and it will be added to your inventory.
Kate knows that she will have to start the bleeding soon, otherwise she’ll pass out.
Next, tap on the compartment to the right of Kate’s leg to open it.
“Evidence Notebook” will fall out of the compartment, so tap on it to pick it up.
Next, let’s take a closer look at the box with the first aid kit.
The box is locked with the four-digit code. We can also see a note with the number “4216”. Memorize/ write down this number (this is not the code for the box, that would be too easy, and having a code written below the lock would be plain stupid). After that tap on the arrow in the upper left corner to go back.
If you look at Phil, you will notice that something is sticking out of his pocket. Select the “Glass Shard” from the inventory and use it to cut open the pocket.
Tap on the cellphone to take a closer look at it.
We can see that some of the letters on the phone actually look like numbers when the phone is turned upside down. So, if we take a look at these numbers on the digits “4216” (the number that we saw on the note) we will have the code for the box. So,
4 = 7
2 = 3
1 = 8
6 = 5
Memorize / Write down number “7385” then tap on the arrow in the upper left corner to go back.
Tap on the box again to start the interaction.
Enter the code “7385” and you will unlock the box.
Let’s collect the medical supplies. Tap on the “Scissors” “Bandage” and “Alcohol Swab” to pick them up.
Ok, let’s treat Kate’s leg wound. First, select the “Alcohol Swab” from the inventory and use it.
Next, select the “Bandage” from the inventory and use it to, well, bandage the wound.
Lastly, select the “Scissors” from the inventory and use them to cut the bandage.
With the “Scissors” still selected, tap on the blue wire to cut it off. “Wires” will be added to your inventory.
Ok, it’s time to get out of the truck. Tap on the windshield glass and Kate will stomp on it with her right leg. Do this several times to break the glass.
When you break the glass, tap on the hole to crawl out of the truck.
Kate wants to look for help. She concluded that the driver of the delivery truck managed to escape, so he probably called for help. At this moment Kate will hear the sound of the truck, and she knows this sound very well. The killer has returned to finish the job.
Kate’s plan is to hide behind the boxes and try to ambush the killer.
The next part is a fairly simple minigame.
Kate should hide behind the boxes and evade the truck.
Killer’s line of sight is represented by light (roughly four by two squares).
This minigame is turn-based, and Kate can move one square during her turn.
Each time Kate moves, the truck will also move.
The truck has a predictable path, it will circle on the outer edge of the boxes, counterclockwise.
The goal is to push light brown boxes on the outer edge. The truck can’t avoid them and it will crush into the boxes. Once the truck hits all four boxes, it will crash.
Kate must keep out of the killer’s line of sight. The easiest way to do this is by hiding inside the hollow boxes. The two boxes in the middle are particularly convenient for this.
Also, the rubble from the boxes that the truck destroys will occupy one square, and you won’t be able to place another box on the same square.
We will do this minigame in four steps. Let’s begin.
Step 1
Push the box in the starting column up, to the outer edge. Use the hollow boxes in the middle for cover, when the truck gets close.
Step 2
Next, we should push the next box to the right. Again, the hollow boxes are in the middle for cover, when the truck gets close.
Step 3
Next, you should push down the box in the bottom left corner. You can approach it through the hollow box on the upper left side.
Step 4
Pushing the last box up should be quite easy. Again, a hollow box on the upper left side should be used for cover.
After Kate wrecked his truck, the killer jumped stepped out of it, with a very angry look on his face. He pulled out the handgun and started to shoot at Kate. She immediately jumped into cover.
At this moment, Phil woke up. Kate warned him to keep his head down because they were under fire. Phil, angrily replied that she should return fire, and threw her his rifle.
Tap on the “Rifle” to pick it up. Phil will warn you that there are only 4 bullets in the magazine.
Select the “Rifle” from the inventory and tap on the killer to start the interaction. Aim at his shoulder, because Kate wants to disarm him.
Once you’ve aimed at his shoulder, tap on the red dot and Kate will hold breath to steady the aim. Tap again to fire once your aim is within the borders of the blue circle and your aiming circle will turn green.
Regardless of your aim, Kate will miss her first shot.
The suspect will run to the right, and he will take cover behind the delivery van. Aim at his shoulder again and fire.
This time, Kate will hit the side view mirror.
This time, the suspect will run to the left, so, again, take aim at his shoulder and fire.
This time, the killer will dodge away, just when Kate pulled the trigger. So far, she missed three times, and Phil warns her that she has only one bullet left. But, Kate is confident that she will hit him with the next shot.
This time, the killer will run to the right and he will take cover behind the wooden box. Again, take aim at his shoulder and fire.
This time, Kate will hit, and you will see the killer dropping his handgun.
Kate will order the killer to come out and surrender, or else she will shoot him. However, he will spring up and jump from the bridge.
At this point, Phil, who is still trapped in the car, will say that he thinks that something is burning. Kate realized that Phil is in mortal danger, and she started to look for a way to get him out of the smashed truck.
Ok, we will first have to search the area and pick up some items, and then we will be able to help Phil.
Tap on the two smashed boxes to move them aside.
Below the boxes, you will find two items. Tap on them to pick them up. “Allen Key” and “Vice Grips” will be added to your inventory.
Next tap on the PDA device to pick it up.
Kate noticed that the PDA device (from the delivery truck) is broken, but if she finds a way to fix it, she will know the content of the delivery boxes, and one of them might contain something that can be used to put out the fire.
Next, tap on the door of the black truck to take a closer look.
Tap on the wallet to search it, and you will find the killer’s ID.
Kate will add a new entry to the Evidence Book, “Truck Registration”. Looks like the name of the killer is Benjamin Lee.
Next, tap on the “Plastic Gloves” to pick them up.
Next, select the “Allen Key” and use it to remove the screws in the top right corner of the door.
Select the “Scissors” from the inventory and use them to cut the blue wires. Another “Wires” will be added to your inventory.
Next, let’s take a closer look at the spot from which the suspect jumped.
Tap on the bloody handprint, and Kate will file it as evidence. Another entry, “Bloody Handprint” will be added to the Evidence Notebook.
Next, select the “Allen Key” from the inventory and use it to open the PDA.
After that, tap on the PDA to start the interaction.
Well, we can see that two blue wires are missing. So, select the “Wires” from the inventory and use them to repair the broken wires.
Here, we have another minigame. The number inside the nodes represents how many wires you should attach to it.
You can see the solution in the image below.
Well, we managed to repair the “PDA Device” and it will be added to our inventory.
Ok, let’s go back inside the truck, and check on Phil.
Needless to say, it seems like Phil isn’t having a very good time. We should quickly find a way to get him out of there, or he’s toast. Literally.
Select the “Vice Grips” from the inventory and use them to pull out the “Key”.
Select the “Key” from the inventory and use it to unlock the glove box.
In the glove box, you will find a “Hook Tool”. Tap on it to pick it up.
Tap on the broken windshield to exit.
Let’s go back to the spot with the bloody handprint.
Select the “Hook Tool” from the inventory and use it to remove the grate.
In this hole, you find a “Valve Wheel” and the “Handgun”. Tap on them to pick them up.
Also, a new entry, “Suspect’s Weapon” will be added to the Evidence Book.
Ok, now we can see that there’s also a syringe in this hole (previously it was hidden below the handgun). If you tap on this dirty syringe, Kate will say that she won’t touch it with her bare hands.
So, select the “Plastic Gloves” from the inventory, and use them to pick up the “Syringe”.
If you tap on the back door of the delivery truck, Kate will say that it is jammed, but she might be able to open it with a little lubrication.
With that in mind, let’s select the “Syringe” from the inventory and fill it up with the spilled oil. “Oil” will be added to your inventory (a small bug, it should be a syringe filled with oil)
Select the “Oil” from the inventory and use it to lubricate the door.
Inside the delivery van, you will see a yellow box. Tap on it to take a closer look.
The box is locked with a five-digit combination. If you look at the bottom right corner of the box, you will notice the barcode.
Tap on the magnifying glass next to the “PDA Device” in your inventory to examine it.
Tap on the “Barcodes”.
Here we can see 6 barcodes. We should find the barcode that matches the one on the lower right side of the box, by comparing the lines.
You should quickly notice that 5. Barcode is a match. Memorize/ write down the 5. Barcode, because we will need this information for the next puzzle.
Once you’re done, tap on the green arrow to go back to the previous Menu.
Tap on the “Delivery Instructions”.
Here, we are interested in the line under the number 5. We can see that the word “PORCH” is some kind of keyword. Memorize/write down this word.
Once, you’re done tap on the arrow in the upper left corner to go back.
Next, let’s take a closer look at the sign on the side of the delivery truck.
Here, we can see a specific number above each letter. So, let’s see what numbers are located above the letters of the word “PORCH”.
P = 2
O = 6
R = 3
C = 5
H = 8
When we put it all together, we get the number “26358”. This number is actually a code for the yellow box in the back of the van, so memorize/write it down.
Once you’re done, tap on the arrow in the upper left corner to go back.
Tap on the yellow box to start the interaction.
Enter the code “26358” and you will unlock the box.
Inside the box, you will find a “Fire Hose”. Tap on it to pick it up.
Ok, let’s go back to the spot with the bloody handprint because that’s actually a fire hydrant.
Select the “Fire Hose” from the inventory and attach it to the hydrant.
After that, select the “Valve Wheel” from the inventory and attach it.
Finally, tap on the wheel to turn the water on. Kate will automatically grab the “Fire Hose” and she will extinguish the fire.
Tap on the red truck to check on Phil.
Phil says that he was a bit worried about the fire, but luckily Kate managed to put it out before the flames reached him. Aside from that minor shock, Phil is feeling fine, and it seems that he didn’t suffer any serious injuries in the crash.
At this moment, they will hear the police sirens in the distance, and they both feel relieved because help is finally on the way. Kate instructs Phil to sit tight, but then she realized that he can’t move and that her words might be interpreted as a joke.
Tap on the broken windshield to get out.
Kate walks toward the officer saying that she’s very glad to see him, but he orders her to freeze and to put her gun down.
She tries to explain that she’s a detective, but the officer just repeats his order in a more threatening tone.
Well, arguing won’t do us any good. So, let’s select the “Rifle” from the inventory and put it on the ground.
Kate tries to explain once again, but the officer cuts her short and informs her that she’s under arrest… Kate really can’t catch a break. She keeps falling from one trouble into another.
Well, that’s the end of the fourth chapter. I think that Kate will be released very quickly once they reach the police station and confirm her identity. Also, Phil will confirm her story. On the other hand, we still don’t know what happened to the killer. Did he survive? And if he did will he go after Kate? Well, I guess we will find out in the next chapter.
You can check out the fifth chapter by tapping on the “Chapter V” button.
Thank you for reading.
